Your Black Card has been Revoked: Points lost for loving Sci Fi.

African American girlfriends with shopping bags

The other day I was having an amazing conversation with one of my best buds. Our conversation, of course, moved to my love of Sci Fi and fantasy.  She sort of laughed when she said, “You know, it’s hard to openly say you love Sci Fi, your Black card will get revoked.” We both had a great laugh and then we talked about it seriously. It really can be hard for people of color to admit that they actually love SciFi and fantasy. It’s a shame really.

I’m wondering if this is just something we’re feeling or if others have the same perception. I’ve put together a little poll to see.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a person or color or not, go ahead and participate.  The question?

Signing a Book Contract with Heart Ally Books

heartlogo3I’m so excited about my decision to Indie publish with Heart Ally Books. I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to push my work to the next level and I’ve found it! I think Lisa Norman is absolutely fanatstic and I’ve enjoyed working with her on my website. I’m more than pleased to take the next step with her in launching my digital novel.

A Blonde Girl Uses Sexuality and Violence to “Sucker Punch” her Male Sexual Tormentors

alicia_young0002When I was in middle school, I was the recipient of a sucker punch. All I remember was that I was trying to talk my way out of being in a gang and “Wham”, one of the girl’s punched me in my face.  I came “to” in darkness, surrounded by middle school feet on the floor. Suprisingly enough, my animal instinct kicked in and I was clutched hold to the girl’s hair. I tried to wrench every strand from the top of her head. It was gruesome for both of us. I’d imagine that some 28 years later that she’d be bald on one side . Certainly, a tragedy for both of us.

A Black Woman asks if she’s a racist for analyzing Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal stories with race in mind

handcuffed-handsYears ago I would have patted my foot in aggravation if someone asked me if I were racist. In college one of my white roommates, told me that I was racist because I ate dinner with other Black students. Give a sister a break. I just thought that it was plain old foolishness. I used to go into this huge HUGE diatribe about how Black people couldn’t be racist because they were disempowered in government, politics, and business. And furthermore, that because we were disenfranchised, the most I could be was prejudicial because being prejudiced was an individual event. Woa! That’s a mouthful.

Alicia McCalla wants a diamond studded leather stock to go with her diamond bullet proof dress. See her interview with Hildie McQueen.

Hilda_headshot_1I’m so happy to be interviewed by Hildie McQueen. I love her great personality. Please take a look at my interview. It’s hilarious. After I did it, I was thinking that I should’ve said I’d like to wear a diamond studded leather stock on my neck to give some elegance to my diamond bullet proof dress in front of the firing squad. LOL. Please leave a comment. Here’s the reprint of that Interview.

Interracial Couple, played by Angel Coulby and Bradley James, has “hot” chemistry on the hit SciFi show Merlin

arthur gwen kissingI just watched the season finale of Merlin. The hit BBC TV series that is being shown on the Sci Fi channel. The show has a large following in the UK but not so much in the US.   I actually enjoy the series but admittedly it wasn’t so great in the beginning. The series, though, seems to have taken a darker tone but still has the humor from the earlier shows. This season I enjoyed many of the episodes but my favorite was the Queen of Hearts.  It was the “romantic” episode.

NY Times Bestselling Author LA Banks Touched a Group of African-American High School Students during a Saturday visit…

LA Banks and Mrs. ThybulleI had the pleasure of visiting the media center at Parkview High School in Gwinnett County, Georgia a couple of years ago on a Saturday. To my surprise, Mrs. Roschell Thybulle’s students waited patiently for the arrival of LA Banks. The students were overly excited and ready to discuss the books. What struck me the most, were that these students were reluctant readers. Here’s an interview with the teacher, Mrs. Thybulle, who spearheaded this event.

Biracial Shapeshifter celebrates Native American heritage in the Urban Fantasy, River Marked

          Cherokee_woman_painted_face

I’ve been following Mercy Thompson’s story since the first book. I love the world that Patricia Briggs has created but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed River Marked. In this series novel, Patricia Briggs slowed down the story pacing to allow the reader to connect with a more intimate side of Mercy. In fact, I was quite enthralled with this “softer” side of Mercy that highlighted her relationship with Adam and the acceptance of her Native American heritage.

Most People of Color Don’t Care for Science Fiction: Morris Chestnut talks about his role on the hit TV series “V”

Morris Chestnut Picture

OK, I’ve been trying real hard to not skee and scream whenever I see  Morris Chestnut on “V.” I’ve always had a little crush. LOL! Totally, a fan girl…

Last season ended on an incredible cliffhanger.  Is Ryan Nichols dead? Did they kill off Chestnut’s character?  It would be so cliche, if the black man dies when the series is taking off. One thing is for sure, Chestnut has acted his butt off during this last season of “V” and not many have noticed.  He’s done a great job of showing Ryan Nichols as a traitor but we still sympathize with him. I never sympathized with Robert Englund’s character.
