Guest Blogger: Laura A. H. Elliott Talks About Writing Latinas and Mariachis

Laura_ElliottWhen fear’s as blind as love, how far would you go to find your happily ever after? Winnemucca is a story about a teenage girl’s enchanted road trip to her true self. The main character, Ginny, is Latina but has grown up in a largely non-Hispanic culture. Nonetheless, she is drawn to the cultural roots that run in her blood and her road trip is a means of allowing that part of her to blossom. In this excerpt from Winnemucca, Ginny is on the road with Las Rosas Rojas y Adoradads, a group of mariachis:

YA Indie Carnival: Suprise! Readers Don’t Know The Difference

sidebar.indieThis week on the YA Indie Carnival, we’re all discussing “your biggest suprise going Indie.”  This was a tough topic.  I believe that as an Indie author, I am much more empowered and have creative freedom but I’m not sure if that’s what’s important to readers.  Sometimes authors focus on the wrong issues. What suprises me the most about Indie publishing is that readers often don’t know or don’t care about how a novel is published. They only look for a high quality purchase at a discounted cost.

Haven’s Bad Boy Has a Steamy Interracial Love Affair

Duke_and_EviThe second season of Haven has picked up. I’ve got so many questions about each of the main characters. I want to dig more and dig deeper. One character that I think is a “hot” bad boy is Duke Crocker played by Eric Balfour. He is always engaged in some form of criminal behavior that involves smuggling something to a secret location.  He is the gothic hero because I still feel like he’s got some good values buried underneath. So imagine my suprise when Evi Ryan played by Vinessa Antoine steps-in.

YA Indie Carnival: YA Indie Authors Worth Checking Out

sidebar.indieThe other day one of my favorite former students said that she wanted to find new material to read. I got the feeling that she was a little burned out with the “same old” books. It’s wonderful to be able to share a few suggestions that are on my shelf to read. Indies are a great way to try something different for a great price. It’s so wonderful to support other Indie authors. Let me know what you think of my suggestions.

Remembering LA Banks: Rest in Peace

LA_BanksI just heard the news of the passing of LA Banks.  Leslie Banks has been an inspiration to me. I’ve always felt a kinship with her because of her love of writing paranormal romance and urban fantasy.  I was so sad to learn that she was ill with adrenal cancer. I prayed that she would regain both her health and strength.  I’m so struck with her death, that I had to stop for a few minutes and remember her warm personality, comforting smile, supportive nature, and awesome storytelling ability.
