Why I love Kick A$$ Female Superheroes…

Well it’s true. When I was a little girl, I wanted to be Wonder Woman.   I’ve always been drawn towards strong female superheroes—the ones who kicked ass and took names.

In fact, some of the best life lessons I learned were from female superheroes. I can’t make this up!  Very powerful survival messages like perseverance, bravery and courage. Growing up and watching my favorites, I was imprinted with the desire to be strong when faced with adversity. Inside, I cocooned myself, nurturing my ability to adapt and overcome. You might laugh at me but I even developed a secret identity—it’s why I enjoy Cosplay so much. It’s rather hard to explain but being able to see a woman as a hero helped me to survive incredible odds. I understood my core mission which allowed me to hold my head up higher.

April 28 is National Superhero Day and I know many people will dismiss the day or believe superheroes to be trite. Ultimately they will be dismissing the power of what a superhero can impart. The truth, for me, is—identifying with female superheroes as a child helped me to create a unique moral compass. I hoped, understood and accepted that justice always prevails.

So I’ll be taking time this month to celebrate Kick Ass female superheroes and tapping into my secret identity, I’ll keep building my superhero series featuring a Black girl because I want to inspire just like I was inspired to be strong, tough and brave.
