Have you ever been dying to tell a story, yet at the same time afraid to tell it? I don’t mean just any around-the-way tale, but a true story that happened to you and no one else knows. I’m talking about every time you think to open your mouth to tell it, your heart starts pounding, your tongue becomes the Sahara Desert and the fear of saying it out loud makes you change your mind.
I’m participating in a special year long blog hop to explain my writing process. I’ve been tagged by the awesome historical fiction author, Piper Huguley. Here are my responses:
Come out and meet authors Alan Jones, Alicia McCalla, Balogun Ojetade, James Mason, LM Davis and Milton Davis as they discuss Black Speculative Fiction and read from their works. Come purchase books and have them signed by the writers. As an added bonus, James Mason will provide caricatures for any purchases totaling $20.00 or more. It’s no secret that I love Urban Fantasy. It’s one of my favorite genres along with SciFi, Dystopian, and dark Paranormals. I adore Faith Hunter’s Jane Yellowrock series and Patricia Brigg’s Mercy Thompson series. But when it comes down to it, I get all excited when I see kick-a$$ black women heroines like in Kenya Wright’s Habitat series or Seressia Glass’ Shadow Chasers series. So, there I was in the middle of writing the Soul Eater when Noelle Pierce unveils this awesome dragon fairy with two guns drawn. Why did she agree to redesign my website? Why did she provide me with this distraction? The dragon fairy princess would not stop assaulting my sleep until I wrote her introduction. I guess, it’s fitting, she is now the main focal point of my awesome website re-do so why shouldn’t I write her tale? Happy 2014! Let me know what you think of my new 2014 web design and meet Aisha, the Dragon Fairy Princess and descendant of darkness:
Writing stories that you love is an awesome vocation and I know most will say that they’d write even if they never received the recognition. I tend to agree. I must write. It’s just a burning passion that I have to share my stories but it’s always wonderful to receive recognition for your hardwork. I’m […]
I was very excited to learn of a course where students studied Black women’s speculative fiction. I would have enjoyed taking a course like that in Grad school. Several of my sister writers are being interviewed for this assignment (Kenya Wright and Crystal Connor are two that come to mind). After working with Elizabeth, I thought it’d be neat to bring Academia into the world of the writer. Here are Elizabeth’s very conscientious and thoughtful interview questions. I appreciated her hard work and thoroughness.
I’ve been diligently working on the Soul Eater book for Nanowrimo. Each morning, I’ve been waking up to write 1700 words. The Soul Eater gushes out in a deep purge. Most mornings, I have no idea the direction that this story will take. The process is mindboggling. In fact, this entire African Elementals series has taken me for a ride. As I unveil the Soul Eater cover, here’s some of my thoughts about this dark urban fantasy series that just refuses to let me go. Let me know what you think:
I have been fascinated with American Horror Story Coven. When the series launched, I must confess that I wasn’t so taken with it. Was it a True Blood knock off? I was hanging out in the Reading in Black FB group, when my writing buddy, Lynn Emery made mention of the historical in accuracies of the show. I’m always fascinated with Lynn’s work, especially when she discusses New Orleans so I gradually became fascinated with the TV series, just to find out what was going on… Lynn agreed to allow me to interview her about the series. Here’s our discussion:
Everything has a cost, the universe is resolved in this. And so it is too with our very own lives; for each action a price; for each decision, a consequence; for each path, a toll. Even for the very air we breathe, a star had to die to produce the elements and complex molecules needed carry on the chain of life.
Like the sweet nectar of a picture plant I want to lure you closer to me w/the tip of my pen.
Wielding the dominance of my prose w/the dangerous skill of a powerful alchemist, I want to distort your senses until the only thing you see, the only thing you want, the only reason you breathe is to breathe…for me.
I want to run my fingers thru your imagination.
