Black Women are Ugly, Fat and Masculine: A SciFi Writer's Response to the Psychology Today Blog

Alicia_Senior_PictureWhen I was 16 years old, I remember riding the bus to school one morning. Two of my male classmates sat across from me. I was totally disinterested in them. I'd seen them before but they never registered in my mind at all. Then one of them said, "Alicia Cunningham, she's only a B. She's to dark to be an A." I looked up. First, shocked that they knew my name but then the audacity to rate me while I was sitting there. So, I looked up annoyed and they kept going over all the girls in my class. Apparently, I wasn't much to look at or talk about.

White Authors Fear Being Called a Racist: When Inclusion is Done Wrong

white_man_with_a_prejudice_blindfoldSome authors of Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal stories get race all wrong and the work that they produce is seen as racist.  I'm one of those people, though, who hold back on the "R" word until I completely read the entire work. So, when a book came across my desk, I gave pause.

White Supremacy Did Exist in Thor: Loki as an Adolf Hitler Archetype

ThorMy husband and I finally got a chance to see Thor. It was everything that we thought it should be... Action, heart pumping, and Thor was a great hero.  Idris Elba actually fit in this Thor version.  In fact, we were impressed with the multicultural crew and strong female characters. For the most part it seemed like a traditional Marvel movie.  The only thing we both disliked was Loki. I mean what was up with his character?

Racists boycott Idris Elba as a Guardian in Thor

idris_elba_in_characterI've being trying to convince my husband to take me to see Thor.  It's totally my kind of movie.  When I started thinking about it, the thought hit me, isn't Thor mostly a white male movie?  I paused and then thought, "I won't be able to write about the movie on my blog." I was wrong. Just search Idris Elba Thor on Google and look at the ka-zillion hits surrounding the controversy of Idris Elba playing a role that isn't traditionally cast with a person of color. It's ridiculous!

From LSD to Senator: A Closer Look at Fringe's Agent Broyles

Lance_ReddickI fell in love with Fringe a few years ago after a co-worker suggested that I watch it. I love the series.  One of the characters that I enjoy watching is Agent Broyles played by Lance Reddick.  By far, this has been one of my favorite Fringe seasons.  We watched Agent Broyles move from LSD to becoming a Senator in one season. How awesome is that?

How the Heck Does Sherrilyn Kenyon know about Sisterlocks? A Closer Look @ Menyara in the Chronicles of Nick

Infinity_Nick_ChroniclesAs a YA author, I love Sherrilyn Kenyon's new series. I already loved reading Nick's adult story and now I thoroughly enjoy learning more about his story as a teen.  When I approached the series, I  knew that it was going to be good. Sherrilyn Kenyon knows how to tell a great story. Can you tell I'm a fan girl? So here I was minding my own business when wham! She introduces me to the character of Menyara! I love this character but more importantly, Menyara has Sisterlocks!

Your Black Card has been Revoked: Points lost for loving Sci Fi.

African American girlfriends with shopping bags

The other day I was having an amazing conversation with one of my best buds. Our conversation, of course, moved to my love of Sci Fi and fantasy.  She sort of laughed when she said, "You know, it's hard to openly say you love Sci Fi, your Black card will get revoked." We both had a great laugh and then we talked about it seriously. It really can be hard for people of color to admit that they actually love SciFi and fantasy. It's a shame really.

I'm wondering if this is just something we're feeling or if others have the same perception. I've put together a little poll to see.  It doesn't matter if you're a person or color or not, go ahead and participate.  The question?

A Blonde Girl Uses Sexuality and Violence to "Sucker Punch" her Male Sexual Tormentors

alicia_young0002When I was in middle school, I was the recipient of a sucker punch. All I remember was that I was trying to talk my way out of being in a gang and "Wham", one of the girl's punched me in my face.  I came "to" in darkness, surrounded by middle school feet on the floor. Suprisingly enough, my animal instinct kicked in and I was clutched hold to the girl's hair. I tried to wrench every strand from the top of her head. It was gruesome for both of us. I'd imagine that some 28 years later that she'd be bald on one side . Certainly, a tragedy for both of us.
