Ned is Dead: A Sistah Couldn't Sleep Last Night!

Ned_StarkIf you haven't watched the latest show, don't read this. It has spoilers. Last night I watched Game of Thrones. I've been on pins and needles all week. Game of Thrones got to be so exciting that I convinced my Grandma to start watching. I know, Game of Thrones, isn't your typical African-American show but my whole family has enjoyed watching it together. For weeks my hubbie and I have discussed, wondered, and pondered who would end up on the throne.  That iron chair.

Guest Blogger: Margaret Fieland Discusses Her Dark Skinned Aliens

Margaret_FielandI'm a way back sci fi fan, but until I started planning "Relocated" last fall, I'd never written any, so partly to get myself past my "sci fi" block, I decided to write a sci fi novel for 2010 NANO.

In my YA sci fi, "Relocated," the main character, 14 year old Raketh (Keth) Frey is an Aleyni/human mix. Aleynis are dark skinned, gray eyed, aliens with psi abilities. In the Terran Federation, use of psi is illegal, and relations between the Aleyni and the Terran Federation are strained at best.

Why dark skin? Well, I wanted my aliens to look distinctive, and I liked the idea of casting against type and making the dark skinned guys the good guys. Plus that's just how they looked in my head.

Alicia the Superhero: Getting Ready for the FFP 2011 Gathering in New York

SuperherosI am so excited about my upcoming trip to New York. It's gonna be a fast paced trip but I'm anticipating having so much fun.  One of the trip's highlights  will be the FFP Gathering. The theme this year is Superheroes. Last year, I had so much fun dressing up in Steampunk but this superhero costume has been exciting to create.  My sister helped me figure out my ensemble. The first thing I did was try and figure out just which superhero I would be...

Guest Blogger Deleyna Marr: It's All About POV. The Need to Write Multicultural SciFi.

Deleyna_web_2I do not believe I am a racist. And yet I can make thoughtless comments, be oblivious, be hurtful without realization or intent. Like when I offered a hairdrier to a black friend. Hey, I thought I was being helpful. Forget color-blind. I can be down-right blind.

I don’t classify people by race. Why? I grew up with parents who were from the deep south. They would whisper things like, “well, he’s black...” as if that would explain something. Those comments made me ill. I grew up in Silicon Valley in the middle of the dot com boom. My early jobs were so multi-cultural that to me the world was a rainbow. I tour guided at a museum that drew international tourists and tried to learn phrases in as many languages as I could.

Kudos to Rick Riordan for Creating Multicultural Characters in the Kane Chronicles

Red_PyramidMy great friend Roschell Thybulle recommended that I read the Kane Chronicles. It's a wonderful YA series written by Rick Riordan the creator of Percy Jackson.  I have to give Mr. Riordan kudos for taking the time to create Carter and Sadie Kane, two biracial children who are descendants of Pharohs.

Sci Fi Channel Had a Star Trek Marathon This Weekend: Feeling Nostalgic and Remembering My Sheroe Uhura

Captain_KirkThis weekend I've been taking it down a notch. I totCaptain_Picardally needed to unwind. I was so excited to see that SciFi Channel replayed all my favorite movies. I totally crush on Captain Kirk and Captain Picard is awesome!  But Uhura is my sheroe! When I was a child, I wanted to be her!

Black Women are Ugly, Fat and Masculine: A SciFi Writer's Response to the Psychology Today Blog

Alicia_Senior_PictureWhen I was 16 years old, I remember riding the bus to school one morning. Two of my male classmates sat across from me. I was totally disinterested in them. I'd seen them before but they never registered in my mind at all. Then one of them said, "Alicia Cunningham, she's only a B. She's to dark to be an A." I looked up. First, shocked that they knew my name but then the audacity to rate me while I was sitting there. So, I looked up annoyed and they kept going over all the girls in my class. Apparently, I wasn't much to look at or talk about.

White Authors Fear Being Called a Racist: When Inclusion is Done Wrong

white_man_with_a_prejudice_blindfoldSome authors of Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal stories get race all wrong and the work that they produce is seen as racist.  I'm one of those people, though, who hold back on the "R" word until I completely read the entire work. So, when a book came across my desk, I gave pause.

White Supremacy Did Exist in Thor: Loki as an Adolf Hitler Archetype

ThorMy husband and I finally got a chance to see Thor. It was everything that we thought it should be... Action, heart pumping, and Thor was a great hero.  Idris Elba actually fit in this Thor version.  In fact, we were impressed with the multicultural crew and strong female characters. For the most part it seemed like a traditional Marvel movie.  The only thing we both disliked was Loki. I mean what was up with his character?

Racists boycott Idris Elba as a Guardian in Thor

idris_elba_in_characterI've being trying to convince my husband to take me to see Thor.  It's totally my kind of movie.  When I started thinking about it, the thought hit me, isn't Thor mostly a white male movie?  I paused and then thought, "I won't be able to write about the movie on my blog." I was wrong. Just search Idris Elba Thor on Google and look at the ka-zillion hits surrounding the controversy of Idris Elba playing a role that isn't traditionally cast with a person of color. It's ridiculous!
