Why I Unpublished My Books from Amazon: Choosing My Readers, My Values, and My Independence

0:00

So, I took a powerful and deeply personal step: I unpublished my books from Amazon and the other retailers.

These books:

  • Breaking Free [LINK]
  • Flee
  • Iniko
  • Origins of an African Elemental [LINK]
  • Rise of an African Elemental [LINK]

Have all been “sunset” or unpublished from Amazon and other retailers.

Why?

1. Standing Firm in My Values Amid DEI Rollbacks

During the current administration's rollback of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies, I've actively chosen to boycott major retailers like Target, Amazon, and Walmart. I'd much rather readers purchase directly from me, knowing that our values align and that their money is supporting an independent, Black woman veteran-owned creative business.

2. Responding to Amazon’s Harmful Policy Changes

Amazon recently announced significant changes that disproportionately impact independent authors. Starting June 10, 2025, they're reducing royalties from 60% to 50% on print books priced below $9.99, a move that directly undermines authors who rely on fair compensation. Despite offering minor adjustments, their decision further highlights the precarious nature of depending on large corporations for creative independence and financial fairness.

3. Embracing Direct-to-Reader Empowerment

This decision to "sunset" my books from major retailers is not simply about economics—it's about reclaiming my voice, vision, and independence as an author. By selling directly through my Shopify store, I create stronger, direct relationships with you, my readers. Your support allows me to continue creating stories that matter, without compromising my values or vision.

Will I Ever Return to Amazon and Other Retailers?

Possibly in the future—but for now, I’m doubling down on my independence. I believe deeply in the power of direct relationships and in supporting minority-owned businesses like my own.

Why I Unpublished My Books From Amazon Buy Direct from Authors

Here’s Why Buying Direct Matters:

  • Support a Black Woman & Veteran-Owned Business: Your direct purchases support independent creators rather than large corporations.
  • Access Exclusive, Eco-Friendly Products: Enjoy unique, sustainable items only available directly from my store.
  • Gain VIP Status and Perks: Receive special offers, bonus content, and opportunities to influence future projects.
  • Make an Impact: Your dollars actively fund diverse, empowering stories of courage and strength.
  • Conscious Consumerism: Where you spend your money matters deeply. Direct purchases amplify your impact and align with your values.

Thank you for joining me in this bold, empowering journey.
